Calabash Barn

Simple, practical, and angular, this barn frame was designed to mesh with the existing stone walls of the prior structure, which had suffered a fire. In contrast to much of Adam’s work, this frame uses square-rule joinery in sawn white pine timbers. The sawn timbers give a soaring quality to the central tower of the frame, much in contrast to low massing of the prior structure, maximizing the functionality of the interior volume. This frame was raised entirely by hand, using a traditional gin pole, tackle, and some ingenuity. The gin pole is visible in the photos.
